Shillong, August 27, 2026: Members and advocates from various Bar Associations across Meghalaya are set to hold a peaceful march in Shillong on Thursday, August 27, seeking the removal of Amit Kumar as Advocate General of Meghalaya.
The protest has been organised pursuant to a resolution adopted at a Joint General Body Meeting of the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association (HCMBA) and the Shillong Bar Association (SBA) on August 24. The Joint Executive Committee of both associations subsequently resolved on August 25 to hold the peaceful demonstration as the first stage of their protest.
According to a notice issued by the HCMBA and SBA, participating advocates will assemble at the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association premises at 10:00 AM, with the march scheduled to commence at 11:00 AM. The proposed route will begin at Centenary Junction (Civil Hospital Point) and proceed towards Barik Point, Malki Point, MPSC Building, Lower Lachumiere and Barik Point, before culminating at Centenary Junction.
Following the march, the advocates will hold a sit-in demonstration at the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association premises. A delegation will also submit a memorandum to the Governor of Meghalaya.
The associations have asked participating advocates to refrain from professional work on the day and actively participate in the protest. They have also directed members to maintain the dignity of the legal fraternity and conduct the march peacefully. Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, has granted permission for the peace march from 11:00 AM to 12:00 noon, subject to a number of conditions.
The administration has directed organisers to ensure that the march does not obstruct or disrupt the normal movement of vehicles and pedestrians and that it is conducted along one side of the road. Volunteers are to be deployed at every junction along the designated route.
The permission order also prohibits participants from carrying lathis, sticks, weapons, sharp objects, dangerous objects or projectiles. Children and persons below 18 years of age have also been barred from participating.
The administration has further directed that no provocative slogans against any religion or community be raised during the march. Participants have been asked to disperse immediately after the peace march and have been specifically prohibited from proceeding towards the Meghalaya Secretariat or Lok Bhavan.
The organisers have also been reminded to comply with applicable Supreme Court directions concerning the use of public address systems, noise levels, public and private property, and maintenance of public peace and cleanliness.
The Deputy Commissioner has warned that any incident leading to a breach of public peace and tranquillity could result in legal action against the organisers, while the permission may be cancelled immediately in the event of any such breach.
The march comes as the Meghalaya legal fraternity steps up its protest demanding the removal of Amit Kumar from the post of Advocate General of the state.
