Tura, August 28, 2026: A large number of secondary and higher secondary teaching posts are reportedly lying vacant across Meghalaya, prompting concerns over the government’s recruitment policy and the functioning of schools.
Education stakeholders alleged that official vacancy figures do not reflect the actual situation on the ground, with many schools continuing to depend on contractual teachers to meet staffing requirements.
They questioned the prolonged delay in regular recruitment at the secondary and higher secondary levels, even as recruitment to other government posts is conducted periodically.
Particular concern has been raised over teachers who have served on a contractual basis for more than a decade and are now approaching or crossing the age limit for regular recruitment.
Critics also questioned the government’s claim that education is its “topmost priority”, arguing that the shortage of teachers directly affects academic performance and the quality of education.
They urged the government to verify the actual vacancies and initiate regular recruitment, while addressing the long-pending concerns of experienced contractual educators.
“Education cannot remain a priority only in political statements; it must be reflected through adequate teachers, timely recruitment and investment in schools,” stakeholders said.
