ACHIK refutes allegations over Chandigre assault and Chibinang market closure, calls reports baseless

Tura, November 1, 2026: The A·chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) has categorically rejected allegations linking its members to an alleged assault at Chandigre Cow Market and the reported forced closure of shops at Chibinang market, describing the claims published by Highland Post on October 29 as baseless and fabricated.

In an official press statement issued on November 1, ACHIK denied any involvement in the alleged assault of a 60-year-old man at Chandigre Cow Market, reportedly carried out by a group allegedly led by Johny A. Marak and associates of the organisation.
The organisation clarified that no member, leader or representative of ACHIK visited Chandigre Cow Market on October 27, 2026, and denied any involvement in the alleged incident. ACHIK further asserted that it is a law-abiding civil society organisation that neither encourages nor tolerates violence, intimidation or unlawful activities by its members or affiliates. It alleged that the accusations were intended to tarnish the organisation’s reputation and public standing.
Regarding the allegations of forcibly shutting down shops and threatening traders at Chibinang market, ACHIK maintained that its communication with the Chibinang Bazar Committee was strictly limited to a lawful request concerning trading regulations.
According to the organisation, it had urged the committee to restrict non-tribal shops and vendors from operating without valid Trading and Non-Tribal (TNT) Licences, arguing that unauthorised business operations could result in tax evasion and violations of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) regulations.
ACHIK also appealed to media organisations, the public and local stakeholders to exercise responsibility and verify facts before publishing reports based on allegations or speculation. The organisation further stated that it reserves the right to initiate appropriate legal action against individuals or entities found propagating defamatory and false information intended to damage its institutional integrity.
