Williamnagar, September 18, 2026: Social activist Jackiqus D. Sangma has alleged that officials of the Fisheries Department, East Garo Hills, are continuing to engage in activities that may violate government service rules, and has sought publication of the matter before approaching the Meghalaya Lokayukta.
In a letter addressed to editors of print and electronic media in the Garo Hills region, Sangma stated that information obtained through the Right to Information (RTI) Act allegedly shows that officials of the Fisheries Department are working as contractors for three government projects.
According to the RTI information cited in the letter, the projects include:
- Construction of a Training Centre at Williamnagar.
- Construction of a Concrete Fish Pond near Green Yard School, Williamnagar.
- Construction of a Watch Tower at Adugre Community Fish Sanctuary.
Sangma alleged that such involvement would constitute a breach of the Meghalaya Services (Conduct) Rules and misuse of public office. He further stated that a formal complaint had already been submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, East Garo Hills, but that no action had been initiated as of the date of his letter.
The activist has given a 20-day period for action, stating that if no action is taken within that period, he intends to approach the Meghalaya Lokayukta in Shillong with documentary evidence, including the RTI response.
Sangma said he has faith in the Lokayukta to investigate the allegations concerning possible corruption, conflict of interest and violation of service rules, and to take action in accordance with law if wrongdoing is established.
He has also requested media organisations in the Garo Hills to publish the letter as a “final public warning” before the matter is taken to the Lokayukta.
