Tura, June 26: The District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Tura, on Friday observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2026 at the Rongram Horti Hub Multi Facility Centre, with officials, students and community members joining hands to raise awareness on the harmful effects of substance abuse and the need to curb illicit drug trafficking.
The programme brought together representatives from various government departments, educational institutions and the local community as part of the global observance held annually on June 26 to promote a drug-free society and strengthen efforts against illegal drug trafficking.
District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO), Tura, Smt. M. O. T. Sangma, delivered the introductory address, highlighting the importance of collective action in preventing drug abuse. The event was compered by Smt. Cherandha A. Sangma, GS, DHEW, Tura.
Resource persons from the Medical Department, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Tura, and the Police Department conducted awareness sessions on the health risks associated with drug abuse, the availability of free legal aid for persons battling addiction, and measures being taken to combat illicit drug trafficking.
The programme also featured cultural performances by interns from Don Bosco College and Tura Government College, including a welcome song and an awareness skit depicting the social consequences of drug abuse and the importance of prevention.
The Block Development Officer (BDO), Rongram C&RD Block, attended the programme as the chief guest and encouraged greater community participation in the fight against drug abuse.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Shri Draisbon M. Sangma, Field Level Officer, DHEW, Tura, reaffirming the commitment of government agencies, educational institutions and citizens to work together towards building a healthier and drug-free society.
