Month-long Airtel network outage sparks public anger in Chokpot; memorandum submitted to Deputy Commissioner

Baghmara, July 29: Residents of several remote villages under Chokpot Block have sought the intervention of the South Garo Hills district administration over a prolonged Airtel mobile network outage that has reportedly disrupted communication for nearly a month.

A memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner by Shri Mansrang Ch. Marak, Executive Member of the Garo National Council (GNC) and former leader of an A·chik organisation, alleged that villages including Durabanda, Tepotgre, Wangmagre, Dopanangre, Awegre, An’chigre, Dura’Asimgre, Alekapara, Bramagre and nearby areas have been without reliable Airtel network connectivity throughout July.

According to the memorandum, the prolonged disruption has caused severe inconvenience to residents, affecting communication and access to essential services. The complaint further alleged that the issue was reported to an Airtel company official, identified as Alok Shah, a Circle In-charge overseeing the network, shortly after the outage began.

Marak claimed that despite repeated complaints from villagers, the official allegedly continued to assure residents that the problem would be resolved soon. However, the network has reportedly remained non-functional, leading to growing frustration among the affected public.

The memorandum also expressed dissatisfaction with the official’s handling of the matter, alleging that repeated assurances without any visible improvement had eroded public confidence. It urged the district administration to take appropriate action against the concerned official for allegedly neglecting public grievances.

The complainant requested the Deputy Commissioner to direct the concerned authorities and Airtel to restore mobile connectivity in the affected villages at the earliest, stating that reliable network services are essential for the people living in the remote hilly areas of Chokpot Block.
