Williamnagar, July 4: The Garo Hills Youth Solidarity (GHYS) has submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of East Garo Hills, urging the district administration to immediately suspend the movement of heavily loaded vehicles on the Songsak–Nangapa–Mendipathar road until repair and blacktopping works are completed.
In the memorandum submitted by GHYS President Endick Marak, the organization expressed serious concern over the deteriorating condition of the road, alleging that the continuous movement of overloaded heavy commercial vehicles, including coal trucks, stone dumpers, log trucks and FCI trucks, has further damaged the road and created severe hardship for local residents.
According to GHYS, the poor condition of the road has made travel unsafe and difficult, affecting thousands of commuters and disrupting access to essential public services such as hospitals, healthcare centres, schools, colleges, government offices and markets. The organization stated that students, patients, elderly persons, pregnant women and other vulnerable groups are among those worst affected by deep potholes, dust pollution and frequent traffic disruptions.
The organization appealed to the district administration to immediately prohibit the movement of all heavy loaded vehicles on the affected stretch until the road is fully repaired and blacktopped, stating that such a step is necessary to safeguard public safety and prevent further deterioration of the road.
GHYS further stated that it has received numerous complaints from residents regarding the worsening road condition and urged the administration to consult local citizens to understand the extent of the difficulties being faced. Photographs showing the damaged portions of the road and potholes were also enclosed with the memorandum as supporting evidence.
The memorandum also warned that if heavy vehicles continue to ply on the road despite its hazardous condition and residents continue to face difficulties in accessing essential services, the organization would be compelled to seek appropriate legal remedies against the concerned district authorities for failing to take timely preventive action.
Copies of the memorandum were also forwarded to the District Transport Officer, Williamnagar, and the Deputy Commissioner of North Garo Hills at Resubelpara for necessary action.
