NEHU Tura Students’ Union seeks urgent action to safeguard ₹45 crore infrastructure project, address staff shortages

Tura, October 25, 2026: The Post-Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tura Campus, has urged the university administration to take immediate steps to safeguard a ₹45 crore infrastructure project under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) and address the shortage of academic and administrative staff at the campus.

In a memorandum submitted to the Vice-Chancellor, the students’ union expressed concern over the potential loss of the sanctioned central funding, which is intended to support essential infrastructure development, including student hostels and an auditorium.

According to the memorandum, the Ministry of Minority Affairs issued a show-cause notice on September 14, 2026, raising concerns over the reported lack of physical progress, delays in issuing work orders and shortcomings in financial monitoring. The PGSU warned that continued administrative delays could put the project at risk of suspension or termination, potentially resulting in the loss of crucial infrastructure funding for the campus.

The union stressed that the project is particularly important for students from the Garo Hills and other parts of the Northeast, who depend on accessible and affordable higher-education facilities.

Staffing Shortages Raise Academic and Administrative Concerns:

Apart from the infrastructure project, the memorandum highlighted significant vacancies in regular faculty positions and the continued reliance on temporary teaching arrangements. According to the PGSU, these issues could affect teaching quality, research activities and the overall academic environment at the Tura Campus.

The students’ body also raised concerns over the shortage of non-teaching staff, stating that administrative processes involving admissions, examinations, scholarship verification and accounts processing have been affected. Such delays, it said, create additional difficulties for students, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Demand for Two Dedicated Deputy Registrars:

To address administrative bottlenecks and improve coordination between the Tura Campus and NEHU headquarters in Shillong, the PGSU has called for the immediate appointment or deployment of two dedicated Deputy Registrars. The union has proposed that one officer oversee academic affairs, while the other handle finance and administration, with the objective of ensuring more efficient management and timely disposal of official matters.

Students Seek Time-Bound Action Plan:

The PGSU has urged the university authorities to prepare and publish a transparent, time-bound action plan for the implementation of the PMJVK project, ensure compliance with the Ministry’s requirements and take immediate steps to address the reported staffing shortages.

The union has cautioned that further delays could jeopardise the infrastructure project and prolong the difficulties faced by students and staff at the campus. The memorandum calls upon the university administration to treat the infrastructure funding and staffing crisis as urgent priorities, emphasising the need for accountability, effective administration and improved educational facilities at NEHU Tura Campus.

The PGSU has appealed to the Vice-Chancellor and the concerned authorities to intervene without further delay to ensure that the sanctioned funding is utilised for its intended purpose and that students receive the academic facilities and administrative support they require.
