Simsanggre, September 30: A group of NGOs from Do·bu has sought the immediate deployment of a full-time Officer-in-Charge (OIC) at Do·bu Police Station, citing concerns over law-and-order management and public safety.

In a representation submitted to Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Marcuise N. Marak on September 28, the A·chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM), Do·bu Regional Unit, and the Garo Student Union (GSU), Do·bu Regional Unit, urged the authorities to take immediate action during the absence of the regular OIC.

The organisations said the regular OIC of Do·bu Police Station is currently on sanctioned medical leave and out of station. In his absence, they stated, a single officer has been given temporary dual charge of both Do·bu and Nengkra police stations.

The NGOs said Do·bu and adjoining areas frequently face law-and-order issues, road accidents and other public emergencies requiring prompt police intervention. They expressed concern that the dual-charge arrangement could affect emergency response and place an additional administrative burden on the officer handling both stations.

The organisations also pointed out that they had previously submitted a representation to the Superintendent of Police, East Garo Hills, Williamnagar, on August 24, seeking the posting of a full-time officer at Do·bu. However, according to the latest representation, a full-time substitute officer has not yet been deployed.

The NGOs have now appealed to the Cabinet Minister to issue necessary directions to the concerned department for the immediate appointment and posting of an independent, full-time OIC at Do·bu Police Station until the regular officer resumes duty.

They have also sought the relieving of the officiating officer from the dual-charge arrangement so that both Do·bu and Nengkra police stations can have dedicated administrative oversight and effective policing.

The representation was submitted in what the organisations described as the larger public interest, particularly concerning public safety and effective law-and-order administration.
