Williamnagar, October 6, 2026: Several students in East Garo Hills are reportedly at risk of missing out on Post-Matric Scholarship benefits due to delays in the issuance of Income Certificates required for scholarship applications.
According to RTI activist and social worker Jackiqus D. Sangma, several students who applied for Income Certificates at the office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Garo Hills, have reportedly been waiting for 20 to 26 days or more.
The issue has raised concern among applicants as the deadline for submitting documents through the online scholarship portal is October 31, 2026. Students fear that failure to obtain their Income Certificates before the deadline could lead to them losing scholarship benefits for the academic year.
The press release stated that under the Citizens Charter and the Meghalaya Right to Public Services Act, Income Certificates are expected to be issued within 7–10 days. However, students, particularly those from remote areas such as Samanda, Songsak and Rongjeng, are reportedly making repeated trips to the DC office at their own expense and are being informed that their applications remain pending verification.
Sangma said he has submitted a complaint to the Deputy Commissioner, East Garo Hills, seeking urgent intervention. He has requested priority issuance of Income Certificates for scholarship applicants, completion of verification within 48 hours in student cases, and consideration of a separate counter or a two- to three-day special camp to clear the pending applications.
He urged the authorities to take immediate steps to resolve the issue and ensure that deserving students do not lose their scholarships due to administrative delays.
