Poor Road Condition on Baghmara–Karongre NH-62 Raises Concern

Baghmara, Sept 24: Commuters along the Baghmara–Karongre stretch of National Highway 62 (old NH-217) in South Garo Hills are facing increasing difficulties due to the deteriorating condition of the road, with residents urging authorities to undertake urgent repair and restoration work.

The highway has developed numerous deep potholes, many of them filled with muddy water, while the blacktop has reportedly been washed away at several locations, leaving loose stones and gravel exposed. The condition has made movement difficult and raised concerns over road safety, particularly for two-wheelers, small vehicles and school-going children.

The Baghmara–Karongre road serves as an important link connecting Baghmara town with Karongre and neighbouring villages. Patients, students, farmers and daily commuters depend on the route for access to essential services and transportation.

The situation is reported to worsen during the monsoon, when waterlogging and damaged road surfaces make travel more hazardous.

Daily commuter Tutu Marak has appealed to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and the concerned PWD (NH) authorities to take up the matter on priority and initiate necessary repair and restoration work on the vital stretch.

Commuters have expressed hope that the authorities will intervene at the earliest to improve road conditions and ensure safer travel for the public.
