Shillong, 24 September 2026: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) has strongly objected to the decision to keep Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks functioning on Sunday, September 27, ahead of the proposed nationwide bank strike from September 28 to 30.
In a press release issued on Thursday, CoMSO General Secretary Balkarin Ch. Marak said the decision to require banking employees in Meghalaya to work on Sunday needed immediate reconsideration, citing the religious and social significance of Sunday in the state.

CoMSO acknowledged the government’s concern about ensuring uninterrupted banking services but said administrative convenience should not override Meghalaya’s social, cultural and religious practices.
The organisation pointed out that Sunday is widely observed as a day of worship, prayer, family fellowship and rest in Meghalaya. It questioned why alternative arrangements could not be explored to ensure banking services without requiring employees to work on Sunday.
CoMSO suggested measures such as extended banking hours before or after the strike, strengthening ATM and digital banking services, and making limited emergency arrangements to meet customers’ needs.
The organisation has urged the Ministry of Finance, Reserve Bank of India, concerned Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks, and the Meghalaya Government to review the decision and consider arrangements that respect the state’s Sunday observance.
CoMSO also called for meaningful consultation with the state and relevant stakeholders on future decisions affecting Meghalaya’s religious and social practices. The organisation said it expects the authorities to respond and take corrective action, adding that it would decide its further course of action “in due course” if its concerns are not addressed.
